Autograph album, 7.25 x 4.25, originally belonging to Belva Lockwood, signed inside in ink by twenty-five politicians and justices, three presidents (including president U. S. Grant and his complete cabinet) as well as the complete Waite Supreme Court. Signers are: U. S. Grant, vice-president Henry Wilson, and cabinet members William T. Sherman, adding “General of the Army,” Hamilton Fish, William A. Richardson, William W. Belknap, George Robeson, Columbus Delano, John Creswell, George Williams, and S. Frances Spinner; Rutherford B. Hayes and James Garfield (clipped signature); Supreme Court Justices Morrison Waite, Nathan Clifford, Noah Swayne, Samuel Miller, David Davis, Stephen Field, William Strong, Joseph Bradley, and Ward Hunt. Other signatures in the album are James G. Blaine (Speaker of the House), Lot Myrick Morrill, and Mark Sibley. Each signature is on its own individual page. Album was acquired from an estate sale in Niagara County, New York where Lockwood was born and raised. The signatures were collected by her during the time she was in Washington, D. C. pursuing her legal career. Lockwood obtained the signatures while in Washington, D. C. because of her ties with Grant and her affiliation with the Supreme Court. She also had close ties with Hamilton Fish whom she campaigned for during his run for governor of New York. Lockwood was the second woman (after Victoria Woodhull) to run for President of the United States, but was the first woman to appear on the ballot in United States presidential election as the candidate of the National Equal Rights Party. In fine condition, with some wear to covers and a touch of mild toning to a few of the pages. Very impressive item with not only the politically correct order in which the signatures appear (all Justices are in order by tenure), indicate that the signatures were not randomly collected, but very calculated and deliberate, making this a fine historical piece.
