“ONE OF THE FINEST AND MOST FITTING TRIBUTES”: The widow Kennedy declines to attend the dedication of a JFK memorial in New Jersey

TLS, one page, 8 x 10.25, black-bordered personal letterhead, September 10, 1965. Kennedy writes to George J. Haney in Newark. In part: “I do want to thank you for your kind letter concerning the memorial which is being completed, at the Military Park in Newark, in honor of President Kennedy and I am certain that this will be one of the finest and most fitting tributes to his memory. The fact that so many children participated in this endeavor—would have touched him deeply—and I know a great deal of credit goes to you because of all the interest you have devoted to this project. I regret—more than I can say—that I must send a disappointing reply to your invitation to the unveiling ceremony on October 12th, however, for a number of reasons it will be impossible for me to be with you on this occasion. There have been a great many memorials to President Kennedy—in this country—and I have felt it would be most difficult and unfair to accept the invitations of one group and then refuse others who have given so much thought and time to their particular memorial. Also, as you know, it is extremely difficult for me to make appearances of a public nature and I have not done so except in the case of Runnymede [the dedication of the Kennedy Memorial at Runnymede, England, in the previous May]. It is my wish that you can understand at least part of my feelings and I do hope that all those who gather for the unveiling will realize that the President’s family and I will never forget the desire of the people of Essex County to perpetuate his memory and erect a monument which can be visited by so many in the years to come.” Matted and framed with two unsigned photos to an overall size of 20.5 x 24.75. In fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA. Oversized.
