Autograph album, leather-bond hardcover, 5.25 x 7.75, circa 1871. The album includes approximately 330 signatures of cabinet members, Supreme Court justices, legislators, and other government officials. Each of the pages bears from one to three examples; most of the pages are double-sided, through many are single-sided. Among the more prominent signers: Ulysses S. Grant (as President, alone on a single-sided page dated Washington, February 25, 1871), Schuyler Colfax, Hamilton Fish, Wm. W. Belknap, John A. J. Creswell, Amos T. Sherman, Columbus Delano, Nathan Clifford (Supreme Court), N. H. Swayne (Supreme Court), Sam F. Miller (Supreme Court), David Davis (Supreme Court), Stephen J. Field (Supreme Court), W[illiam] Strong (Supreme Court), Jos. P. Bradley (Supreme Court; all of the preceding justices appear singly and in groups on single-sided consecutive pages), James G. Blaine, Benj. F. Butler, J. H. Rainey (first African-American congressman), J[ames] A. Garfield (collector’s pencil notations slightly touching signature), John Sherman, H[iram] R. Reeves (first elected African-American senator), H[annibal] Hamlin, Roscoe Conkling, and a large selection of representatives and senators. Aside from the binding (rubbed and worn, with missing spine), a few collector’s pencil notations, and a handful of light brushes and blots, the book is still tightly bound and in fine condition, the interior remarkably bright and fresh, the signatures large and boldly penned.
