ALS, one lightly lined page both sides, 5 x 7.5, May 8, 1859. Tyler writes to Mr. Grigsby regarding a book sent to him by another gentleman. In part: “I have read it with pleasure and in the main am ready to adopt its suggestions. I have always believed in the importance of a grammar school, hence my interest upon more occasions than one, its value to the College [William and Mary, his alma mater, of which he was an active supporter]. The only doubt in my mind is whether we should want under such engagement more than one professor.” Accompanied by an attractive unsigned period portrait engraving. In very good condition, with scattered toning and spotting, heavy central vertical fold, and subtle show-through. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
