Description

Presidential recommendation for a judge

ALS as president, three pages on two lightly lined adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, Executive Mansion letterhead, December 21, 1871. Letter to J. W. Douglass, recommending a former neighbor, Judge J. F. Ling of St. Louis. In full, “The enclosed papers were left with me, for my examination, by Judge J. F. Ling, of St. Louis, Mo. with the request that I should send them to you this morning. I have had no time to examine but forward them as requested. If Judge Ling has not called on you, he will do so today and I wish if convenient you would see him. He is an old neighbor of mine in Mo. and a man for whom I have great respect.” The first page of Grant’s letter has an interesting offset between the lines from a letter by as Grant’s Secretary of War dated July 24, 1872. Letter reads, “I wrote at once yesterday and later in the day telegraphed Hendrick to come here. He will leave home tonight, and I will see that he does that & anything else that you deserve. Your kindness in this matter is a great personal favor to me.” In very good condition, with intersecting mailing folds, aforementioned mirroring of Belknap’s letter on first page, with more mirroring of Grant’s handwriting to final page and a short separation along spine of pages. Belknap was a distinguished Civil War general, but he resigned the office in disgrace when an audit uncovered in 1876 shown he had taken over $24,000 in bribes. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
