Description

Roosevelt consoles a fellow “Boone and Crockett” with a hunting tip: “By all means try south of the Yellowstone Park. That is great elk country”

TLS, two pages, 5.25 x 7, Navy Department letterhead, May 28, 1897. Letter to his friend Colonel William Carey Sanger. In full, “By all means write both articles; if possible, within a month, and send them to George Bird Grinnell, Editor Forest and Stream, 346 Broadway, New York. I am extremely sorry you are not going back to the Legislature; still if you are not going and want to hunt, by all means try south of the Yellowstone Park. That is great elk country. If you will write to Tazewell Woddy, Esq., care Yancy’s Hotel, Yellowstone Park, he will give you the information. Perhaps he can go with you. He is very old now, but he is still a first rate hunter.” William Cary Sanger devoted much of his life to military and civic service in Albany and Washington. Col. Sanger was in the circle with Theodore Roosevelt concerned with wilderness conservation. Sanger served as Assistant and Acting Secretary of War. A Kansas army installation was named Camp William Cary Sanger. Col. Sanger joined President Theodore Roosevelt as a member of the prestigious Boone and Crockett Club and served as Trustee at nearby Hamilton College at Clinton, New York. In fine condition, with a spot of trivial toning to first page and slight mirroring of text due to premature folding, which in no way affects legibility. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
