Description

Nothing personal: “I have been trying to aim my attacks at Kennedy’s advisors rather than at him personally”

TLS signed “Dick,” one page, 7 x 10.5, personal letterhead, August 23, 1961. Nixon, then between his defeats for the presidency and the governorship of California, writes to Edmund Whitman in New York. In part: “As you probably have noted, I have been trying to aim my attacks at Kennedy’s advisors rather than at him personally. Your letter suggested a new way to get at this group subtly and effectively. I also particularly liked your suggestion that I use the analogy of applying for an Operator’s License and asking Americans to engage in some self-examination as far as their own fitness as citizens is concerned. This is the kind of down-to-earth example which gets a message through to the man in the street.” Matted and framed with two unsigned photos and an engraved plaque to an overall size of 20.25 x 16.75. Paperclip impression and faint rust stain at top edge, otherwise fine, clean condition. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
