Description

Working some poetic charm on a fellow Pulitzer Prize winner: “Imagination, sensitivity, and enthusiam are no longer hidden by the long stare which causes time and space—but not me—to congea.l”

ALS signed “Jack,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 6.25 x 8, United States Senate letterhead, no date [circa late 1950s]. Kennedy sends playful greetings to noted historian Margaret Coit. In full: “Many thanks for your letter—after reading it, your success becomes somewhat understandable. Imagination, sensitivity and enthusiasm are no longer hidden by the long stare which causes time and space—but not me—to congeal. Evidently Mr. Krock [Arthur Krock, prominent Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist] got you to relate your stream of consciousness to him—as Mrs. Krock has been twitting me about you ever since; I wonder whether she has been twitting Mr. Krock—or does he [illegible] her to his stream of consciousness. I hope he doesn’t. What strange sinister stories could you have told him. When do you return to haunt again this ancient city?” Coit won the 1951 Pulitzer Prize in Biography for her book John C. Calhoun: American Portrait; Krock was to have won in the National Reporting category in the same year but, per Pulitzer regulations, was disqualified since he was a sitting member of the prize committee. Light scattered soiling and a few very subtle brushes to text, otherwise fine condition. The letter perhaps relates to previous congratulations from Coit to Kennedy following his own Pulitzer win, in 1957, for his best-selling Profiles in Courage. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
