ALS signed “U. S. Grant,” four pages on two adjoining lined sheets, 5 x 8, September 1, 1871. Grant writes to Mrs. King. In full: “ I received your kind invitation for myself and family to be your guests during our proposed visit to Brown Co. On the receipt of your invitation I had abandoned the idea of going to the Pacific this year, and did not much think that I should go even to Ohio. My mind however is now made up, providence willing, to leave Long Branch about the 12th of Sept. I will spend three or four days in Pa. with friends & relatives and then push on to Lexington Ky. While there my family, excepting my oldest son and myself will drive up to Georgetown to spend a day or two. Thur. will be convenient for our arrival. My relations will I think feel hurt if I do not stop with them and I am sure that it will afford me pleasure to see them, as it will to see all my old acquaintances.” Heavy folds (one lightly touching signature) with short partial separations (one with archival reinforcement), a few tiny chips and spots, and light soiling, otherwise fine condition. The signature is dark and generally unaffected. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
