War-dated DS as president, one page, 15.25 x 9.5, October 9, 1861. President Lincoln appoints “William Huntington of Washington…to be Marshal of the United States for the said Territory.” Boldly signed at the conclusion in black ink “Abraham Lincoln,” and countersigned by Secretary of State William Seward. Cloth matted and framed to an overall size of 22.5 x 16.5. Marshals were the only federal lawmen in unorganized territories, often the only federal representatives of any kind. U.S. marshals were involved with everything from policing the border with Mexico to pursuing outlaws and vigilantes, from enforcing fugitive slave laws to investigating counterfeiting and bank fraud. In fine condition, with a couple spots of symetrical toning and previous storage folds. The seal remains intact and Lincoln’s signature is as bold as the day he signed this document.
