Description

Rare and beautiful snail sketch in Dali by Dali

Signed book: Dali by Dali. First edition. NY: Harry N. Abrams Inc., 1970. Hardcover with dust jacket, 5.75 x 8, 156 pages. Signed and inscribed on the copyright page in black felt tip, "A Charles, Dali, 1973," who draws a fantastic large sketch of a snail on a leaf. A magnificent signed book from the surrealist master, who adds a decidedly rare and highly desirable sketch of a wandering snail. Autographic condition: fine. Book condition: VG/VG, with light edge toning and a few small tears, creases, and losses to edges of the dust jacket.

The snail occupies an important place in the Dalinian universe as it is intimately linked to a significant event in Dali’s life—his meeting with Sigmund Freud on July 19, 1938. As Dali believed that nothing occurred to him simply by chance, he was captivated when he saw a snail on a bicycle outside Freud’s house. He connected the snail with a human head, more particularly with Freud’s head. As with the egg and lobster, the hard shells and soft interiors of the snails also fascinated Dali, and the geometry of their curves enchanted him.
