Description

Circa 1700 engraved color map of walled Amsterdam by Dutch cartographer and artist Frederik de Wit, 15 x 10.75, which is strikingly similar to a map created by Cornelis Anthoniszoon in 1538, and shows the medieval city in 1482, with its walls, gates, chapels, towers, and ship-lined harbor depicted in impressive detail. Dutch text to the left reads, (loosely translated) “Amsterdam has been enlarged in the third half…and marked with the letter A,” with text to lower border reading: “Amsterdam enlarged the second time is first enlarged with stone walls before years 1482.” In very good to fine condition, with some staining, and a couple of tiny holes, in the margins.
