Dutch astronomer (1900-1992) who made significant contributions to the understanding of the Milky Way. ALS signed “J. H. Oort,” one page both sides, 5.75 x 8.25, Leiden Observatory letterhead, September 29, 1979. In part: "The title of the most recent study I made was 'Great Expectations.' This title was taken from one of Dickens's last novels. The article dealt with what I thought would be some of the most important data about the evolution of the universe that very large telescopes planned for the near future may reveal. This is one subject I am working on. Another subject is the large gaseous halo which appears to surround the galaxy…I am sorry I have no manuscript; I always destroy them as soon as an article gets typewritten. However, I am enclosing a sheet with some computations concerning the density distribution in the Hyades cluster…Astronomy today seems to be in the most wonderful state of development, such as it has not known since the age of Kepler, Galilei and Newton." The sheet of calculations referenced is included. In fine condition.
