Description

American journalist (1907-1967) who ran a rescue network in Vichy France that helped approximately 2,000 to 4,000 anti-Nazi and Jewish refugees to escape Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. He was the first of five Americans to be recognized as 'Righteous Among the Nations,' an honorific given by the State of Israel to non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust. Rare World War II-dated TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, American Labor Conference on International Affairs letterhead, June 21, 1944. Brief letter to Carolyn Willyoung Stagg of Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., in full: "Thank you very much for sending me a copy of Joseph Kessel's Army of Shadows. I am looking forward to reading it." In fine condition, with some light edge creasing, and light show-through from a stamped date notation on the back.
