Description

Union major general (1822-1901) who fought at Antietam and Second Bull Run. Porter was court-martialed in 1863 for disobeying an order from Gen. Pope to attack but was exonerated in 1878. Uncommon 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photo of Porter in uniform and posed in near-profile, crisply signed in ink, "F. J. Porter, Maj. Genl." Reverse has the backmark of R. W. Addis, Washington, DC. In fine condition.
