French criminal-turned-criminalist (1775-1857) who founded the first private detective agency, and whose life story inspired several writers, including Victor Hugo, Edgar Allan Poe, and Honoré de Balzac/ Two handwritten notes in French by Vidocq: one signed "Vidocq," one page, 6.5 x 4, 1819, in part (translated): "I certify the signatures, sincere and genuine"; the second is unsigned, one page, 4 x 5.25, October 17, 1839, in full (translated): "Consider, carefully and ask the client what needs to be done. We must put an end." In fine condition, with some light foxing to the signature sheet.
