Description

Bush honors Eisenhower, who "exemplified all that is best in the American spirit"

DS as president, signed “George Bush,” one page, 7 x 10.5, White House letterhead, January 5, 1990. Bush signs a statement honoring President Dwight D. Eisenhower, in full: "I am delighted to extend my warmest greetings to the people of Kansas as you commemorate the centennial anniversary of the birth of Dwight David Eisenhower.

As a soldier, statesman, and President, Dwight Eisenhower exemplified all that is best in the American spirit. He was virtually indispensable to the Allied victory in Europe during World War II. His great skill as a tactician and his extraordinary personal qualities as a leader were critical to the success of unifying Allied forces, commanders, and resources for a campaign that will be forever remembered as one of the greatest feats in military history—the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944.

D-Day was the beginning of the end for Naziism, a brutal, totalitarian ideology that cost millions of lives and threatened to sweep away the values of Western Civilization. It was Dwight Eisenhower who accepted the surrender of the German army on May 7, 1947, and who earned the gratitude of all who cherish liberty—then and always. Would that he could be with us today to celebrate further triumph of freedom over totalitarianism that we are witnessing in Eastern Europe. This was his dream.

Yet, we also remember that this remarkable man's achievements went far beyond the battlefield. During his two terms as President, Ike won the affection and respect of the American people for his unwavering commitment to the universal cause of freedom and human rights.

It is fitting that the people Kansas take pride in the achievements of this great American and their native son. The 'Man from Abilene' never wavered in what he called his 'fundamental life purpose—the protection and preservation of basic human liberty.' We do well to remember his example. I commend you for your devotion to the principles Dwight Eisenhower worked so hard to uphold, and I send you best wishes for an enjoyable event. God bless you." Signed at the conclusion in black felt tip by George Bush; also bears an autopen signature to the lower right. In fine condition, with a small area of paper loss along the upper right edge.
