Description

Incredibly rare mathematical manuscript by Dirichlet for his 'Note on Definite Integrals'

Leading German mathematician (1805-1859) who made deep contributions to number theory, including the creation of the field of analytic number theory; he is credited with being one of the first mathematicians to give the modern formal definition of a function. Exceptionally rare handwritten working mathematical manuscript in French by Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 7 x 9, being the last four pages of Dirichlet's 'Note sur les integrales definies [Note on Definite Integrals],' published in Crelle's Journal (Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik) in 1829. Throughout the text, Dirichlet pens several integral equations as he extends and simplifies the methods introduced by Poisson and Laplace. Through a series of straightforward manipulations, Dirichlet arrives at a formula here denoted as "(9)." Giving specific values the constants in his formula allowed Dirichlet to obtain in just a few pages what had taken his predecessors great lengths. In fine condition, with light creasing and faint foxing.
