Description

The Impressionist sketches a cure for a stomach bug

ALS in French, signed “C. P.,” two pages both sides, 5.25 x 8.25, October 25, 1891. Letter to his son Lucien, discussing remedies to relieve a stomach disorder from which Lucien's brother Georges is suffering. He provides a detailed recipe for beef tea "which is much used in England," listing the ingredients, including "a really fresh egg. It is useless if the egg is not fresh," and vegetables including carrots and leeks, which he sketches in the margin. He urges Lucien to "write every day about Georges's condition, and if necessary see a doctor." He encloses 100 francs for the doctor's fee and can't make up his mind about "writing to your mother; she is going to be worried again. I don't know if it isn't better to say nothing."

He then turns to business affairs: "Yesterday I saw Geffroy. He told me that he has not yet received an order from M. Gallimard. Madame Gallimard has been very ill and it appears that the father has been terrible, so that M. Gallimard has not been able to deal with your business. I am waiting for an opportunity to speak to M. Gallimard about it. Moreover, Geffroy is going to talk to him about it in two or three days. I must make an appointment with the latter. I don't know what to do. Your mother is clamoring for me down there; she is terribly put out that I am still here, because she has promised to visit the Estrucs for a fortnight. I would like nothing better than to leave, for I have plenty to do, but it is absolutely essential that I do not let your business go wrong, and surely my presence here is necessary for Georges too." In fine condition.
