Description

Bored to death, Renoir writes of the Fournaise family—his famous Impressionist subjects

ALS in French, signed “A. Renoir,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8, no date. Letter on the Fournaise family, who were the subjects of many of his Impressionist-style paintings, also mentioning Octave Dubourg, a framer in Paris on Rue Saint Roch and friend of Renoir and Pissarro. In part (translated): "Tell Madame Fournaise to wait for my return…That I will reimburse them and we will see. Tell her if she needs money, I can send some to her…What it annoys me for as long as it lasts. If it disgusts me, I'll sue for being it done…Try to arrange your time so as not to get bored too much. I will come back as soon as I can because I am bored [to death]…Say many kind things to the whole Fournaise family. I think I am no more than 15 days…If sometimes Madame Fournaise went to Paris, please ask her to come to Dubourg for an arrangement." In fine condition, with missing lower right corner tips.

The Fournaise family appeared in several of Renoir's Impressionist-style paintings, notably the very famous 'Le déjeuner des canotiers [Luncheon of the Boating Party]' (1881), and the paintings 'Monsieur Fournaise' (1875) and 'Portrait of Alphonsine Fournaise' (1879). Dubourg also appears in the correspondence of Pissarro and that of Van Gogh. A fascinating artistic letter from one of the Impressionist masters.
