TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, April 9, 1957. Letter to Joseph W. Seacrest, co-publisher of Nebraska's Lincoln Journal. In part: "I wish that I could be with you on the 12th. It is impossible, unfortunately, and I hope that you will express my fraternal greetings to everyone at the banquet. Please tell them that Missouri, as a state and a Masonic jurisdiction, has always been interested in the great state of Nebraska. If I am not mistaken, Missouri charted the lodges in Nebraska and Iowa and every other state whose territory was included in the Louisiana Purchase." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
Truman was an active Mason, and of the fourteen U.S. Presidents who were Masons, President Truman is the only one to have been given the 33° of the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite. ‘Freemasonry,’ Truman wrote, ‘is a system of morals which makes it easier to live with your fellow man, whether he understands it or not.’
