Description

Paperback copy of A Grief Observed by C. S. Lewis, sourced directly from the Seattle home of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love. The book, 151 pages, 4 x 6.75, published by Bantam Books in 1976, features several ballpoint annotations in an unknown hand, with the opening page dated January 1992 and bearing an ownership notation: “Bridgid Shields, 20 Tyson’s Ford Road, Newark, DE 19711.” Other instances of handwriting occur on the title page, “fate up against your will thru the thick and thin,” lyrics from the song ‘The Killing Moon’ by Echo & the Bunnymen, which also appear on page 67; on page 84, the words “hippie bull shit” are scrawled near a circled passage: ‘Sometimes, Lord, one is tempted to say that if you wanted us to behave like the lilies of the field you might have given us an organization more like theirs.’ Penned on the reverse of the final page, “9/92, Bridgid, fun with sentence diagraming [sic], [diagram] sweet young thing ain’t sweet no more,” which is the title of a song from Boiled Beef & Rotting Teeth, a 1989 EP from Seattle grunge band Mudhoney. On the upper and right textblock, the sentence “Pussy galore turned free kitten” is written backwards. In very good condition, with creasing and some spine damage.

During the early 1990s, the consignor of this book worked as security for Kurt Cobain and then later as a night watchman at his Seattle home at 171 Lake Washington Boulevard East. This book was one of several items gifted to him during his time of employment.
