Description

"I had not thought of taking up theatrical work again but intended to devote myself to literature"

ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, personal letterhead, July 31, 1906. Letter to "Mr. Bispham," in part: "I had not thought of taking up theatrical work again but intended to devote myself to literature. You are, however, one of the very few people I should care to work with, so if we can arrange terms &c I shall be happy to join you…let me know what you wish to pay as salary…I should like to meet your wishes in all ways I can, consistent with my own interest…It may be some assistant in judging your expenses if I tell you my salary with Irving—of course in strict confidence. When he gave up the Lyceum I had £40 per week…The only thing that stands in my way is that I have undertaken to give some lectures in the Autumn & Spring." In fine condition.

Stoker worked as business manager for Henry Irving's world-famous Lyceum Theatre in London between 1879 and 1898, where he supplemented his income by writing a large number of sensational novels—his most famous being the vampire tale Dracula, published in 1897. From the collection of Stephen Adamson.
