Description

Group lot of six items signed by Maurice McDonald, the Dallas police officer who arrested Lee Harvey Oswald a little more than an hour after the November 22, 1963, assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The lot includes:

A TLS, signed “Officer Maurice N. McDonald,” one page, July 18, 1979, City of Dallas letterhead, in part: “Enclosed, you will find a few copies of the Official records and reports, you may find to be of interest. Also, I am forwarding a ‘button’ from my uniform that I was wearing in 1963. I have also added a small photograph of me taken in front of the Texas Theatre, where I arrested Lee Harvey Oswald.”

As referenced in the letter, the group lot includes: a copy of the Dallas Police Department (DPD) arrest report for Lee Harvey Oswald, signed below in black felt tip, “M. N. McDonald,” with arrest details: “This man shot and killed President John F. Kennedy and Police Officer J. D. Tippit. He also shot and wounded Governor John Connally”; a copy of the DPD homicide report for the murder of John F. Kennedy, signed below in black ink, “Officer Maurice N. McDonald”; a matte-finish 2.5 x 3.5 photo of McDonald at Texas Theatre, signed in black ink, “Officer Maurice N. McDonald”; and a gold-tone “City of Dallas” police uniform button belonging to McDonald. Also included: a ballpoint signature and inscription, “To: Mr. John F. Meek, Best wishes always, Patrolman—Maurice ‘Nick’ McDonald, #1178,” on an off-white 5 x 3 card; a ballpoint signature, “Ptl. M. N. McDonald #1178, Dallas Police Dept., Dallas, Texas,” penned on the reverse of a 6 x 3.5 mailing envelope; a copy of a 4-page handwritten account of McDonald’s “Arrest and Capture of Lee Harvey Oswald,” inscribed by McDonald on the last page in black felt tip, “for John F. Meek”; copies of the finger and hand-prints of Oswald and Jack Ruby, and a copy of the homicide report for Oswald. In overall fine condition.
