Description

LS from Postmaster General John McLean to New York Senator Martin Van Buren, respectively signed "John McLean" and "M. Van Buren," one page, both sides, 7.75 x 10, May 27, 1828. The letter, addressed from the Post Office Department, in full: "I have the honor to inform you that instructions have this day been forwarded to the Dist. Attorney, directing him to suspend all further proceedings in the Case of G. L. Dix, until the next Session of Congress, agreeably to your request." Van Buren pens his response on the opposite side of the letter, "With M. Van Buren's best respects," and then addresses the adjacent second integral page to "Isaiah Townsend Esq." In fine condition, with intersecting folds and two light seal-related stains. An uncommon and desirable pairing of signatures from two notable political leaders.
