Description

The detective novelist considers a "thriller with a European background"

TLS signed “Ray,” one page, 7.25 x 10.75, personal letterhead, October 16, 1956. Letter to Edgar Carter of the H. N. Swanson literary agency, in part: "I am sorry to be obstructionist or stupid but I do not understand why Revue think they have a right to copyright the agreement you sent me. Surely this agreement is a license and not in any way a grant of rights in a portion of the copyright. As a matter of fact I believe that the copyright is still owned by the Saturday Evening Post in trust for me, except as to first world serial rights. I have the thing all ready and would appreciate a word from you to clear this up for me. I may be all wrong of course, but it is natural for me to question anything I do not understand…I have low blood pressure and am still not well, and I can't stand living entirely alone, but I have a remedy for that in mind. Somebody whose name I did not catch called me up from B.H. and asked me to do a thriller with a European background. I had to say that I wasn't up to it yet and referred them to you. I should like to do it very much, if I could, but I think it might be fatal for me to undertake a job and not finish it. The word would go around that Chandler is too old and too sick, you can't depend on him." In fine condition, with several staple holes to the top.
