In Webster's three-hour-long speech concerning the issue of states’ rights to permit slavery, he endorsed the Compromise of 1850. Webster argued that slavery should not take root in new US territories, but could not be abolished where it already existed. He also insisted that citizens abide by the Fugitive Slave Act and return escaped slaves to their Southern owners, raising outrage from Northern abolitionists while winning over moderates. As an inscribed copy of Webster's important speech on the slavery question, this is a superb historical artifact.
