American admiral (1837-1917) best known for his fabled victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War. ALS, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, Office of the Admiral letterhead, December 20, 1899. In part: "I hope sometime to have the pleasure of dining with you and the other members of the dining club, but when that time will be is very uncertain, as every moment of my time is taken up with engagements, official and otherwise. It was most kind in you to ask me and believe me is fully appreciated. When in New York last month I spent an hour in our beautiful club house and was truly delighted at all I saw." In fine condition.
