Description

United States naval officer (1756-1826) who fought in the Continental Navy during the Revolutionary War. Captured by the enemy in 1777, while serving on the Brig Lexington, he was imprisoned in Mill Prison, England, but escaped to France to join John Paul Jones. ALS signed “Ric'd Dale,” one page, 8 x 10, November 30, 1799. Letter to William Byerly, in part: "We have the pleasure to enclose your Invoice and Bill of Loading for your Investment shipped on board the Canton. We hope the Good may arrive safe and to a good Market." In very good to fine condition, with some staining, and a short split to the end of a horizontal fold. Accompanied by an engraved portrait bearing a facsimile signature.
