Description

Important British botanist and explorer (1817-1911) who was Charles Darwin's closest friend; he served as director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, for 20 years. Rare 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Joseph Dalton Hooker in a full-length pose, signed in the lower border in black ink, "J. D. Hooker, 1862." Published by the Maull & Polyblank photography studio of London. In fine condition, with collector's notations on reverse. Consignor notes that this photo derives from the collection of German botanist Eduard August von Regel, the director of the Russian Imperial Botanical Garden in St. Petersburg.
