American novelist (1892-1977) best known as the author of such crime/noir classics as The Postman Always Rings Twice and Double Indemnity. TLS signed “Jim,” one page, 6 x 7, personal letterhead, November 1, 1954. Letter to Edgar Carter of the H. N. Swanson literary agency, about his Civil War novel Past All Dishonor. In part: "On Past All Dishonor, in case you want to show it to Mr. Rosenberg, I enclose a memo of my own, which he can forward to his principal if you want him to. For your info, I think the book I am finishing, once we offer it to the studios, could hot me up again, in which case Past All Dishonor might really bring a price, as it is tailored to order for the big screens, and presents no serious censor trouble to a studio that really wants to do it. The new one would have no censor angle of any kind, and as it looks so good, I hate to let the other one go for buttons." In fine condition, with a paperclip impression and staple holes to the upper left corner.
