Description

Civil War-dated partial manuscript DS, one page, 3.5 x 7.75, March 8, 1865, featuring a closing endorsement from Grant, which reads: “Approved, U.S. Grant Lt. Gen. Hd Qts. Armies of the U. States, City Point, Va, March 8 th/65.” The upper portion consists of a recommendation penned and signed by Major General Godfrey Weitzel, who writes, in full: “I have known and observed Capt. Norton during the last nine months, a portion of which time when I was Chief of Staff of this Army. He was immediately under my supervision. He is a faithful, good and reliable officer and fully competent for the position which he seeks, and I most cheerfully recommend him for it. G. Weitzel Maj. Genl. Comdg Corps.” In very good to fine condition, with old tape stains along the edges, impinging on the signature area.

The recipient of the position, Captain Lemuel Norton, was Chief Signal Officer of the Army of the Potomac from July 1863 to April 1864, including CSO. at the Battle of Gettysburg. From May to September 1864 he was CSO of the Department of Virginia and North Carolina, and was with the Army of the James at the Siege of Petersburg and at Richmond, Virginia. In March 1865 he was brevetted Lt. Col. USV for 'faithful and meritorious services' in the campaigns against Richmond; his brevet no doubt aided by these two endorsements.
