In 1947, she earned an Oscar nomination for her role in the adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's play Mourning Becomes Electra. It was taken for granted that Russell would win the Academy Award—to the point that she began to rise from her seat just before the winner's name was called—but Loretta Young was named Best Actress instead. This film achievement award from Look Magazine represents a fine consolation prize, awarded to one of the finest actresses of the age.
