ALS signed “John G. Whittier,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, June 15, 1882. Letter to a friend, in part: "I have just got back from Harriet Beecher Stowe's birthday celebration at Newtonville, too fatigued to do anything more than to say that I am not able to accept thy very kind invitation. Nothing would give me more pleasure, were I strong enough, than to be with you at your Forest Festival. With my whole heart I rejoice in the movement which promises so much for the beauty, healthfulness, and true wealth of the country. In a few years Boston & the suburbs will greatly need such a breathing place as the Middlesex Fells. I notice with pleasure that our neighbors of Lynn are moving to secure the beautiful forest around Dungeon Rock. Other localities in Massachusetts will follow with good work." In very good to fine condition, with areas of light toning, and some thin paper on the last page from prior mounting.
