Partly-printed DS as president, signed “R. B. Hayes,” one page, 17 x 14, December 18, 1878. President Hayes appoints Thomas Coggeshall as "Postmaster at Newport, in the County of Newport, State of Rhode Island." Signed at the conclusion by President Hayes and countersigned by Acting Postmaster General James Noble Tyner. The red ribbon and gold seal to the lower left remain intact. In very good to fine condition, with a few creases, and small splits along the intersecting folds.
