ALS signed “J. C. Calhoun,” one page both sides, 4.25 x 6.75, February 19, 1850. Letter to Joseph White, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and another officer of the Atlantic & Pacific Canal Company. In part: "I have been honoured by your note inviting me to attend a dinner to be given by the Atlantick & Pacifick Canal Company to the charge d'affairs from Nicaragua Thursday next. I am compelled to decline the invitation, as my engagements here & the state of my health will not permit me to accept." In fine condition.
In the 1850s, Joseph L. White was president of a company that included his brother David and Cornelius Vanderbilt, which received a contract from the government of Nicaragua to operate steamships and a railroad between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and to construct a canal between the oceans. To further his business interests, White became a supporter of William Walker's attempt to overthrow Nicaragua's government. While in Nicaragua in 1861, he was shot and killed by a business rival.
