ALS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, August 7, 1896. Written from Newbury, New Hampshire, a thoughtful letter to a bishop, in part: "Reaching home yesterday after a short journey in Europe, I found your kind letter and the newspaper and sermon which accompanied it.—All of these I have read with great interest and pleasure. Will you allow me to make some slight return for your kindness, by accepting the inclosed check. You know a thousand ways of doing good, & could as well dispose of millions as of the peace your friends confide to you—but why will you not, once in a while, buy something for yourself and thus give pleasure to others? There must be some little thing you have seen lately, and said 'I would get that if I had a hundred dollars I had no use for.'" In fine condition, with a few light stains to the first page.
