Description

Praise for a fellow writer's characters, "so marvelously limpid"

French writer (1871-1922) known for the monumental sixteen-volume In Search of Lost Time, regarded as one of the greatest achievements in world literature. ALS in French, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 7.25, no date. Letter praising the writing of Alfred Vallette, editor at the Mercure de France, a Symbolist review publication. Proust writes from his apartment at 102 Boulevard Haussmann, where he lived from 1906-1919. In part (translated): "I thank you a thousand times for taking the trouble of responding to my letter. I wanted so much for you to...in the event that you were not acquainted with these characters. Moreover the only good ones are those who make up the writing of M. Vallette, so marvelously limpid and yet which seem already to have been traced in an album of facsimiles. Do excuse my having bothered you with all of this." In fine condition.
