Description

German composer (1864-1949) whose colorful symphonic poems and operas earned him a place among the most important figures in late-19th and early 20th-century music. His best-known work is 'Also Sprach Zarathustra' (1896), which attained iconic status as the theme of the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. DS, in German, one page, 8 x 8.5, February 22, 1927. Document listing funds sent to one-armed pianist Paul Wittgenstein amounting to $11,000, by way of an $8,000 check from New York and a $3,000 check from Amsterdam, arranged by the concert management office of George Kugel. Double-matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 20 x 14.5. In very good to fine condition, with scattered light creasing, and extreme fading to the text, but not the signature. In 1926-27, with Wittgenstein in mind, Strauss wrote his 'Panathenäenzug—Symphonic Etudes in the form of a Passacaglia, for piano (left hand) & orchestra.' Wittgenstein gave its first public performance.
