Description

Officer in the United States Navy (1819-1892) who served in the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, as Superintendent of the Naval Academy, President of the United States Naval Institute, and Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Squadron. ALS from Christopher Raymond Perry Rodgers, signed “From your affectionate father,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 9.75, May 3, no year but Civil War date. Letter to his son Raymond P. Rodgers, in part: "Many thousand troops are passing through the quiet streets of Annapolis—the firemen…went through yesterday. Our beautiful grounds have been sadly disfigured by the troops, though the men have behaved with propriety, decorum as I could not have supposed possible. The Midshipmen's quarters and many of the houses of the officers and professors are filled with soldiers, the battery and boat house are turned into store houses. Huge sheds have been erected in the rear of the quarters, and a rail road has been run from our lower wharf to connect with the old road—The harbor is full of vessels. My son, you must ever bear in mind your duty to your country! Let loyalty to the stars and stripes be in your heart next to your love to God and if this was last until you are able to bear arms let your earliest vigor be devoted to the unflinching support of the old flag under which so many of your blood have served faithfully." In very good to fine condition, with scattered spotty staining.
