Description

Staff officer and brigadier general (1838-1901) in the Provisional Army of the Confederate States. Manuscript DS, signed “G. M. Sorrel,” one page, 7 x 9, April 25, 1861. Official letter issued by Lt. Col. Briscoe G. Baldwin to Brig. Gen. J. B. Kershaw, in full: "The following is an extract from a circular received from the Ordnance Bureau dated 22nd inst., 'Par II. Please to advise as to the propriety of dispensing with Knapsacks and substituting a light oil cloth, 6 feet by 3. So arranged as to be convertible into a shelter tent.' You will confer a favor by obtaining and forwarding to this office the opinion of The Commanding officers of your Corps as to the propriety of the change indicated." Signed and approved at the conclusion by Sorrel. In fine condition.
