Description

"I conducted an exhaustive planet search at the Lowell Observatory, covering 2/3rds of the entire sky," recalls Tombaugh, "Pluto was the only new planet to show up"

American astronomer (1906-1997) best known for discovering Pluto in 1930. ALS, one page, 8.5 x 11, February 21, 1995. Letter to Dale Parry, in part: "The Hubble Space Telescope in its now repaired condition, and in orbit beyond atmospheric disturbances, makes it a super-power telescope in resolving very small angular detail for planets and stars, equal to better than 0.05 second of arc. This is equivalent to resolving two candles (1 inch apart) from a distance of about 60 miles! In the years 1929-1943, I conducted an exhaustive planet search at the Lowell Observatory, covering 2/3rds of the entire sky. Pluto was the only new planet to show up." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
