Description

"There is no better actress"—McCrea on his famous costar, Barbara Stanwyck

DS, signed “From Joel McCrea, Rt #1, Camarillo, Calif.—93010-1",” three pages, 8.5 x 11, no date, signed again at the conclusion by McCrea. Unusual questionnaire relating to the various films McCrea starred in alongside award-winning actress Barbara Stanwyck, which includes: Gambling Lady, Banjo on My Knee, Internes Can't Take Money, Stella Dallas, Union Pacific, The Great Man's Lady, and Trooper Hook. For the 1936 film Banjo on My Knee, McCrea notes that "Zanuck wrote a disparaging letter to Barbara—showing his ego & stupidity—Walter Brennan stole the gesture." When later asked if he had anything to do with Stanwyck's test for 1937's Stella Dallas, McCrea affirms that "King Vidor the director wanted Stanwyck from the start but Goldwyn wanted to test 3 or 4 other good actresses to be sure…She was far and away the best, but she shouldn't have had to test—anymore than you would test Gable for a part. There is no better actress." McCrea details his location for the premiere of 1939's Union Pacific: "Stanwyck was there with de Mille. I was working in a picture with Jascha Heifetz and had to talk via telephone." His final statement concerning his work with Stanwyck: "Only the greatest, no reservations—best I ever met—Every crew we ever worked with loved and admired her and so did I. She taught me a lot & I shall be ever grateful to her." In fine condition.
