Two resolutions, each 9.75 x 14.75, presented by the US Senate and US House of Representatives to Major Leroy Gordon Cooper in recognition of his 22-orbit Project Mercury space flight in 1963. Senate Resolution 143, presented May 16, 1963, reads in part: “Whereas Major L. Gordon Cooper, of the United States Air Force, has completed the longest flight in space ever undertaken by an American; and Whereas the bravery, skill, and dedication of Major Cooper have aroused the admiration of the people of the world, and demonstrated the capabilities of free men in the exploration of space...the Senate of the United States extends its profound congratulations to Major Cooper on his heroic accomplishment, and expresses its gratification to his family and to all those who have contributed to the success of his mission.” Signed in black felt tip, “Lyndon B. Johnson,” in his capacity as vice president and president of the Senate, as well as by Senate secretary Felton M. Johnston. House Resolution 351 is identically worded, dated May 20, 1963, and signed by Congressional clerk Ralph R. Roberts. Both framed to 10.75 x 16. Water staining at the top and right of each document incurred when fellow astronaut’s Deke Slayton’s Houston home was flooded in June 1979, otherwise in fine condition. The staining is well away from the signatures, and the gold foil seal on each is intact as is the purple ribbon on the Senate document. Accompanied by photocopies of The Congressional Record.
