Description

Outstanding signed portrait of Gehrig taking a rare break

Ultra-rare vintage glossy 5 x 7 Acme Newspictures portrait of Gehrig leaning forward and resting on his forearms, signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To Jean, With kindest regards, Lou Gehrig.” In very good condition, with scattered surface marks and creases, and light overall crazing to finish. Gehrig’s signature and inscription are very bold and prominent.

This stunning image of Gehrig—the man who played in 2,130 consecutive games—is unique because of the casual pose it reveals. The “Iron Horse” is not shown as the consummate ballplayer that he was, but rather as a humble human being, taking a break from playing the game he loved to pose for the camera. One look into his eyes, however, immediately calls to mind not only the longevity of Gehrig's consecutive games-played record but also the raw emotion of his tearful farewell from baseball at age 36. A superb photograph; scarce in general, this is the first time we have ever seen this particular crystal-clear image. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
