Perhaps the greatest player in the history of the game, George Herman “Babe” Ruth (1895–1948) was among the five charter inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Ruth distinguished himself as the first player to hit more than 30, 40, and 50 home runs in one season, and his record of 60 home runs in the 1927 season remained unbroken for some 34 years. Exceptional vintage matte-finish 15.25 x 19 photo of Ruth at the plate in his Yankees road uniform, following the trajectory of another monster blast, circa 1933–34, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “To Bob Schrecengost from Babe Ruth 1947.” In 1946, Ruth began experiencing severe pain over his left eye. In November of that year, a visit to French Hospital in New York revealed that Ruth had a malignant tumor in his neck that encircled his left carotid artery. Before leaving the hospital in February 1947, after receiving post-operative radiation therapy, Ruth had lost approximately 80 pounds. On April 27, 1947, despite his health problems, Ruth was able to attend Babe Ruth Day at Yankee Stadium, where he spoke to a capacity crowd of more than 60,000, including many American Legion youth baseball players.
