From McKay’s innovative 1914 cartoon
Description                           Estimate: $3,500+

(Winsor McCay, 1914) Original production drawing featuring Gertie and Jumbo the Mastodon from Gertie the Dinosaur, showing Gertie looking behind her as the mastodon appears in the lower left. Accomplished in ink on 9 x 6.75 rice paper and affixed to a slightly larger mount. In fine condition, show-through from adhesive at edges. In the cartoon, Jumbo walks across the scene in front of Gertie, who picks him up by the tail and hurls him into the lake. While Gertie dances in triumph, Jumbo squirts her with water. Gertie then retaliates by throwing a rock at him. McCay made 10,000 drawings in the creation of the film, of which only 400 are known to have survived, making this a rare and very desirable depiction of these two prehistoric characters.
