Supremely important naturalist (1743–1820), best remembered for his expedition to Newfoundland and Labrador, his participation in James Cook’s first great voyage, and his role as President of the Royal Society for over four decades. ALS signed “Jos: Banks,” one page, 7.25 x 8.5, December 11, 1790. Letter to a gentleman. In part: “Allow me to return my sincere thanks to your Lordship for the agreeable news your Lordship has been pleased to communicate to me.” Affixed to a same-size sheet for structural reinforcement. In very good condition, with overall creases, scattered staining, and a few edge tears. An incredibly scarce letter, this is the first Banks we have offered. RR Auction COA.
