Training for his 1962 Mercury mission, Schirra receives his “Top Secret” ID badge

Wally Schirra’s 1962 identification badge for the Atlantic Missile Range, identification number 84096, issued during his training for his Mercury flight onboard Sigma 7 in October 1962. The badge measures 2.5 x 3.75, features his photo on the front, and is signed in red ink on the reverse, “Walter M. Schirra, Jr.” A metal fastener is affixed to the back. Accompanied by an 8 x 5 card that served as the NASA paperwork to issue Schirra this badge. Dated April 30, 1962, with the astronaut’s clearance level identified as “Top Secret.” Signed in blue ballpoint on the reverse, “Walter M. Schirra, Jr.” with the astronaut crossing out the beginning two letters of a carbon copy of his signature. Pre-certified Scott Cornish and RRAuction COA.
